Chapter 9 - Desires Fulfilled

Satan has convinced thousands of others to hang onto the edge of the gap. They struggle desperately to hold up an image that says, "I'm okay, you're okay," while inside they're hurting and bruised by relationships that have used them and tossed them aside, or they're layered with the guilt of their wrong choices in marriage or family or work or church! That's the ones who are still in touch with their consciences. What about the others? Satan keeps them busy, so busy "partyin' on the edge" that they don't even notice the fall waiting for them! They don't fall because they quickly grab onto the next person who walks by and hang on for another "ride." The only times these people notice how close they are to the edge is when they're alone. (Did you ever notice how much the "party-ers" don't like to be alone?) Can you see it yet? Can you see the vacuum Satan creates, as he SUCKS YOU IN?

I propose a simple definition of this gap between what we're being told and the reality of our situation. What's the void in people's lives that tricks them into believing "I'm okay, you're okay," as they go about doing what they want, when they want, with whomever they want (just like I did), while the world yells, "Just be prepared!" and our enemy Satan whispers, "That's right, don't get caught!"? What tricked me? Why did I choose to have sexual intercourse with men before I was married?

Perhaps you're making the same choice with a man or a woman, a boy or a girl right now, or you have in the past. I say we do it because there's a G-A-P in our lives. It's called: God's Ancient Principles, which you and I ignore. We either choose to ignore the very principles we have been taught are in the Bible; or not knowing these, we still choose to ignore the conscience which God gave us to lead us in right and wrong choices.

God's Ancient Principles are not too old to work today. "Ancient" just means these rules for living are tried and true, proven to be for our good as they have stood the test of time. These principles for living are clear, if we're willing to look at them closely. A study of the Bible can show us God drawing a line right down through the middle of our lives. On one side He writes "Works of the Flesh" (man's way), and on the other side He writes "Works of the Spirit" (God's way). The works of the flesh are those things we do most naturally, if we just let ourselves go (whatever, whenever, with whomever we want) and use no self-control. The works of the Spirit ("Spirit" meaning God's Holy Spirit) are the things God wants us to choose to do.

You can find this list in the Bible. It says, "Now the deeds of the flesh are evident, which are: immorality [sex outside of marriage], impurity, sensuality [deliberately doing things to excite or attract others], idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, factions, envyings, drunkenness, carousings, and things like these of which I forewarn you...that those who practice such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God" (Galatians 5:19-21). What's on the "Works of the Spirit" list? "...love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control..." (Galatians 5:22-23).

The works of the flesh do not please God. Sexual immorality, impurity, and sensuality are among those things listed as sin. There is eternal consequence for choosing to do these things. God makes it very clear: "Do not be deceived; neither fornicators [sex between unmarried people], nor idolaters, nor adulterers [a married person having sex with someone other than his/her own spouse], nor effeminate, nor homosexuals, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, shall inherit the kingdom of God" (I Corinthians 6:9,10). That means, the persons who do these things are separated from God (because they have separated themselves from God by choosing their own way instead of God's way), and cannot be with God (either during their life here on earth as long as they continue to ignore God, or later with God in heaven after death).
